Fashion Friday: Presenting Fall 2013’s Trends, courtesy of Fashionably Kate
Hello, Focused to be Fit readers! Thank you, Lauren, for the opportunity to be a guest writer on your blog! I’m excited to share with you the top trends for fall and how to wear them on today’s Fashion Friday. From rebellious street wear to traditional American pastoral and ladylike silhouettes to gender-bending menswear, there’s a possibility for all of your varying identities. Along with the elements of each trend, below are what to invest in and what to save on to stay fashionable through winter.
Rebellious Street Wear
· Leather, especially quilted
· Chains, studs and spikes
INVEST in a leather or faux moto jacket. This adds-instant-edge piece should be in everyone’s wardrobe.
SAVE on accessories like studded heels and spiked jewelry. Who knows how long the more punk items will be “in.”
American Pastoral and Folk
· Cozy knits
· Tweed and plaid
· Beige, brown, red, navy, army green (Green is a trend in itself this season!)
INVEST in an Aran knit, turtleneck or something camel-colored. These pieces could last you a lifetime.
SAVE on a bulky scarf in plaid, red or neutral.
· Pencil skirts
· Full, mid-length skirts
· Skirt Suits
INVEST in either a pencil skirt in a rich color or a full skirt in a classic pattern. These babies may come and go in magazines but they are wardrobe staples.
SAVE on a crop top to pair with a full skirt.
· Boyfriend jeans
· Slightly wider trousers
· Menswear patterns: herringbone, houndstooth, pinstripes or Prince of Wales checks
· Tuxedo-inspired pieces
INVEST in a slightly wider trouser in a menswear pattern. Sources say we want a break from the skinnies and these prints are a recurring classic.
SAVE on the boyfriend jeans. While these may be trending for a while, I found a pair I love for super cheap at Aeropostale.
Quick Tip: Mine are actually labeled skinny jeans but I got a size slightly too big so they hang a little looser, but their stretch hugs all the right places.
Patterns & Prints
· Dresses and matching separates with distinctly repetitive and striking patterns
· Animal prints, especially leopard and snakeskin
· Florals in deep colors
INVEST in a dress in a pattern you love and will love for years to come.
SAVE on matching separates until the trend passes and any pattern of which you may tire.
· Pastels and jewel tones
· Oversized shapes
· Full skirts with nipped waists
· Funky furs
INVEST in a coat in a bold hue with a classic shape to ensure it lasts from year to year.
SAVE on a jacket with a fun print, but short lifespan.
Gray is the New Black
· Shades of gray from pale to charcoal
INVEST in timeless pieces in deeper grays and high quality fabrics.
SAVE on a heather gray sweatshirt or sweater that’s embellished or printed.
