Oh, hello there!
I have had numerous emails asking me how to grill pizza. So, rather than emailing each person back individually, I thought it would be fun to turn it into a post and share it with everyone. Obviously, it is no secret that I am obsessed with grilled veggie pizza – I probably eat it once a week – no joke – so we’ve kind of mastered making it!
First: Choose your crust
I buy pre-made super thin crusts from a local store in town – the thinner the better for me – almost like a flat bread. Eric prefers a thicker crust though, so I usually buy him the thicker pre-made crust from the same store, Pillsbury Pizza Dough (in with refrigerated food section) or ‘make your own dough packages’ where you just add water. There are so many types of crust so find your favorite. You will also need a handsome grill master to assist you. 😉
Pre-made crust: Turn on grill to lowest setting. Pour some olive oil in a bowl and brush it on one side of the crust then, put the oiled side face down on the grill. The length of time will vary depending on thickness of crust (my super thin crusts on takes a couple minutes to get crispy). Once the crust is golden, flip it over, put olive oil on the other side and then have your ingredients ready because you need to move quick for this part.
Pizza Dough: These tend to be harder to work with but it can be done. Turn the grill on the lowest setting. If using Pillsbury Dough, unroll it from the container onto a baking sheet, flatten it out and brush it with olive oil. Now, go grab the hottie that is assisting you and have him/her help you flip the crust onto the grill (this takes some practice – Eric is way better at it than me!) oil side down. Let it cook until golden and flip it over – raw side facing up (two spatulas seems to work best). Olive oil that side, add pizza sauce, ingredients and put cover down.
Choose your ingredients:
Some of my favorite toppings include: mushroom, green pepper, banana pepper, onion, broccoli, tomato, and basil
The boys tend to like: Chicken, pepperoni, ham, pineapple, 3 cheese
Favorite combos we’ve made include:
-Chicken with bbq sauce/pizza sauce/ranch mixed
-Sauteed green pepper, mushroom and onion
-Ham, pineapple, and BBQ sauce
-Banana Peppers and broccoli
Eric and my favorite ingredient, hands down, that goes on on every pizza: RED PEPPER FLAKES!
Spread the pizza sauce on the side you just flipped as well as your ingredients and cheese and immediatley put the grill lid down.
When we were on vacation, we used a charcoal grill and you can’t adjust the temperature on those so we had to wait for the coals to almost burn out until we could cook because it was simply too hot – but
we Eric did it and they were amazing!
Grilled pizzas would be great to do at parties! Set up a station of ingredients and let guests build their own – it would be a lot of fun! Hope you will try these out. If you get thin crust and go light on the cheese they can be MUCH healthier than what your favorite pizza delivery boy brings you. Enjoy!
